“The Chicken Team were the first Cherwell team to have Learn to lead training as they were an established group, The skills they have learnt are immeasurable – all students involved have grown in confidence and the team work has been fantastic. At the first full meeting this academic year 40+ new members came to be a part of the team – making a real difference”. Julie Stuart-Thompson, Cherwell Learn to lead Link Teacher
On 16th October five students from Cherwell secondary School in Oxford travelled to London to be presented with a Giving Nation Social Action Award and a £500 charity donation in recognition for their entrepreneurial skills and fundraising efforts.
The team have been involved in a charitable initiative which aims to reduce poverty through education in South Africa and Cameroon. Through a range of fundraising events students are actively involved in financing the setup of a number of chicken farms, which aim to offer villagers a sustainable egg production business. In the past year alone students have raised in excess of £2,500 to support this enterprise through a number of events.
This long running project has reached far beyond the school gates, with ex-members of the group acting as mentors to current pupils.
The Giving Nation Social Action Awards is an annual event bringing together the very best in young people’s giving. It recognises schools and alternative education settings who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to charity and social action.
